In the early days of building management, activities focussed primarily on large public buildings as well as office buildings, factories and shops. This was triggered, among other things, by the desire for more comfort and the need to save energy.

Integrated sensors and software make these devices intelligent, allowing them to react to and act upon changes in their environment, such as temperature. Interconnecting these devices enables them to communicate with each other.
