Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE)

Following the successful introduction of e-bikes, electric vehicles are now also beginning to establish themselves in the global market. Sales numbers and market shares are on the rise; several carmakers have already announced their plans to abandon the internal combustion engine altogether.

Governments, too, are increasing the pressure toward greater numbers of electrically powered cars on the road. A major shift in transportation is already under way, the market for charging stations and wall boxes is developing accordingly, and in some cities public charging stations are springing up like mushrooms.

To better understand application explanations on the topic of vehicle electrification from the public power grid to the charging station and the OBC (On-Board Charger), the present whitepaper series will shed some light into the aspects mentioned below.

What You Will Learn From This Whitepaper-Series

PART 1: Basic Considerations on Charging Stations

The first chapter of the whitepaper will provide an overview of the different types of charging stations. That is, which stations can be found at which locations, where it is sensible to use these, and why.

It will then provide an overview of the individual steps taking place during power conversion. Safety aspects around personal protection will be discussed, closing with an overview of the different connector systems found at charging stations.

PART 2: A Comparison Between Hardware Architectures

The second chapter of the whitepaper will describe the hardware architectures most commonly used in the development of these systems. Here, a detailed description of AC and DC charging will be provided.

The explanation of the power conversion in Part 1 will be followed by a more detailed description in Part 2, also taking a look at power factor correction, rectification, and DC/DC converters. In addition, the chapter will be explaining how one can accommodate high power density in extremely small sizes.

PART 3: Stabilizing the Control Loop Through the DC Link

The third chapter of the whitepaper will deal with current measurement in the charging station, and then focus on the design of the DC link capacitor in combination with line inductance.

The parts described are the most essential assemblies in the field of power transformation. An ideal combination of these parts will result in an extremely high power density on the smallest possible PCB space.
