HIROSE FX36: Floating Board-to-Board Connectors for Automotive

Three-Axis Tolerance Compensation

HIROSE ELECTRIC expands its connector portfolio with the FX36 series, a 0.5mm-pitch floating board-to-board connector designed for high-density integration in powertrain components for battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and hybrid vehicles. The connector compensates for PCB position tolerances in the X, Y, and Z directions while combining this freedom of movement with high temperature resistance and vibration absorption.

More Integration Flexibility on the PCB

As vehicle electrification continues to advance, powertrain components need to accommodate more functions within increasingly limited space. At the same time, PCB design, component layout, and mechanical robustness are becoming more demanding. The FX36 series addresses these requirements with a 0.5mm pitch and a design optimized for high-density assembly. This creates additional space for integrating electronic functions while enabling smaller and lighter assemblies.

Floating Function Compensates for Position Tolerances

The floating structure of the FX36 series was specifically developed for applications where PCBs are exposed to movement and positional tolerances during assembly or operation. In the X and Y directions, the connector provides a floating range of ±0.7mm in each direction. In the Z direction, position tolerances are compensated for by an effective mating length of ±0.5mm.

Vibration Absorption Along the Mating Axis

In addition to tolerance compensation, the design supports reliable operation in vibration-intensive environments. It can compensate for both PCB misalignment and vibrations along the connector's mating axis. Combined with its high temperature resistance, this creates a board-to-board connection for applications where conventional connectors can reach their mechanical and thermal limits.

Why is the FX36 Series Suitable for Applications Subject to Vibration?

The FX36 series compensates for PCB movement and position tolerances in the X, Y, and Z directions. This helps maintain a reliable connection even in vibration-intensive applications and where installation space is limited. Intended applications include X-in-1 units, inverters, converters, on-board chargers, electric power steering (EPS) systems, domain controllers, and industrial applications.

Variants for Different Design Requirements

The FX36 series is currently available with 40 positions and a 20mm mating height. HIROSE ELECTRIC plans to introduce additional versions with different contact counts and mating heights, opening up further options for mechanical designs and integration concepts.
