QUALCOMM Unveils Two Robotics Platforms for Diverse Applications

Recently QUALCOMM unveiled two new robotics platforms to complement their existing roadmap of highly integrated devices servicing different robotics categories from autonomous mobile robotics and drones to entry level service robots and toys and educational assistants.

Versatile, low power, pin to pin hardware and software compatible platforms

They contain all the essential ingredients a robot builder needs to develop innovative applications, including a quad or eight core ARM CPU, integrated camera image signal processor, cellular, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity, AI, computer vision and sensing via dedicated low power DSPs. You get it all in a highly integrated and pin-to-pin compatible family of robotics systems contained on chips supported by a feature-rich software package specifically designed for robotics and running on embedded Linux.

Cost-Effective Robotics Platforms for Diverse Applications

The RB1 and RB2 platform’s purpose is to serve the requirements in the mid and entry level market segments for a cost effective and low power platform that is easy to deploy quickly.

The RB1 platform is being adopted into cleaning robots, toys and companion robots. It incorporates the following list of hardware capabilities:

  • Quad Core ARM CPU, 4xA53@2.0GHz
  • GPU: Adreno 702@845MHz
  • Video: 1080p30(Encode)/(Decode)
  • Display: 1xMIPI-DSI 4-lane, HD+(1680 × 720)) @60fps
  • Camera: Dual ISP, 2xMIPI-CSI, 4-lane to support 3 cameras simultaneously
  • AI Capability: 0.5 TOPS
  • Peripheral support includes: USB 3.1 type-C, EMMC v5.1 and SD 3.0

The RB2 is a pin-to-pin hardware compatible and it complements the RB1 hardware (see bullets below) offering increased CPU and DSP performance while delivering more AI horsepower to enable higher performance object detection, avoidance, path planning and navigation as well as natural language interaction support for robotics applications.

  • Octo Core ARM CPU, Kryo 260 (4xA73@2.0GHz+4xA53@1.8 GHz)
  • GPU: Adreno 610@845MHz
  • Display: 1xMIPI-DSI 4-lane, FHD+(1080*2520) @60fps
  • Video: 1080p60(Encode)/(Decode)
  • AI Capability: 1.2 TOPS

The RB2 platform is currently adopted into service robots, drones and robot mowers

The RB1 and RB2 share a common software release, based on the Yocto Linux operating system distribution. This software SDK provides a simple and flexible platform to rapidly build robotics projects. It incorporates the build framework, software components, tools, and sample applications to evaluate the platform and build software images for the target product. ROS and AWS Robomaker support is provided to support Robotics applications.

RB1 and RB2 development kits are available now from CODICO.
