Battery-Charging ICs

Precise Charging for Every System: Battery-Charging ICs are designed to support various cell chemistries and ambient temperature conditions. By applying optimized voltage and current profiles, these ICs ensure safe and efficient charging independent of specific operating environments. Critical parameters such as charge current, current limits, and temperature thresholds are precisely controlled.

Power-Path Management

Dynamic Power Distribution: In addition to the charging function, battery-charging ICs integrate advanced power-path management. As long as sufficient input power is available, the charging circuitry supplies the system load while simultaneously charging the battery. If the available power is no longer sufficient for both, charging is automatically reduced or suspended to maintain uninterrupted system operation. This dynamic power management improves overall efficiency and prevents unnecessary battery discharge.

Battery-Management ICs

Safety, Balancing and State-of-Charge Estimation: Battery management is an integral part of every lithium-ion battery system. Battery-management ICs monitor each individual cell with respect to:

  • Safety: Preventing overcharge and deep discharge to keep the battery within a safe operating area.
  • Balancing: Since cells exhibit different capacities and behaviors, balancing ensures that current bypasses fully charged cells. This extends the lifetime of the battery pack and improves usable capacity.
  • State-of-Charge Estimation: Unlike capacitors, the capacity of a lithium-ion cell cannot be determined from voltage alone. These ICs combine multiple parameters—voltage, current, temperature, and time—to accurately estimate the state of charge.
