Operating Principle of PT100 and PT1000 Sensors

Platinum temperature sensors are based on the physical principle that the electrical resistance of platinum changes in a precise and stable manner depending on temperature.

The following applies:

  • PT100 → 100Ω at 0°C
  • PT1000 → 1000Ω at 0°C

Thanks to the nearly linear resistance-temperature characteristic of platinum, these sensors enable highly accurate measurements over a wide temperature range.

Advantages of Platinum Sensors Compared to NTC Thermistors

Platinum sensors (PT100/PT1000) offer high measurement accuracy, excellent long-term stability, and nearly linear behavior, which significantly simplifies signal processing. They also provide reliable performance across a wide temperature range.
NTC thermistors, on the other hand, are more cost-effective and offer higher sensitivity within limited temperature ranges, as well as faster response times depending on their design.
