SAGAMI’s Litz Wire Inductors for Class-D Audio Amplifiers

Lower AC Losses

SAGAMI's 7G23R series reduces AC losses in output filter inductors for Class-D amplifiers. The Litz wire winding minimizes losses at high switching frequencies, resulting in lower heat generation. For example, the 7G23R-100M 10uH stays significantly cooler than its predecessor, the 7G23G-100M, creating additional room for compact, high-power designs.

Critical for Audio Quality and Thermal Performance

Class-D amplifiers operate at switching frequencies of several hundred kHz. An LC low-pass filter at the output removes these switching components while allowing the audio signal to pass through to the speaker. The filter inductor therefore has a significant impact on both audio quality and the amplifier's thermal performance.

High-frequency ripple currents cause AC losses in both the core and winding. At the same time, magnetic stray fields can affect EMI performance and, consequently, overall system performance. These effects become increasingly significant as output power increases. Learn more about Power Inductors.

What Are the Benefits of Litz Wire in Class-D Output Filter Inductors?

The 7G23R series uses a winding made up of many thin, individually insulated strands. This distributes the high-frequency current across the entire conductor cross-section, keeping AC losses low at typical Class-D switching frequencies. The effect is clearly demonstrated by the 7G23R-100M 10uH: at no load, it generates about half as much heat as its predecessor, the 7G23G-100M. This reduces thermal stress and provides additional flexibility for compact layouts.

Typical applications include high-power audio amplifiers, AV receivers, and other Class-D designs where high output power, low heat generation, and excellent audio quality are required.
